[Blog] So Now What Do We Think of Keane?
Written by superblueflude on Tuesday, 3rd Nov 2009 11:56

So finally we have that long awaited win, yet there a still hundreds of fans out there still calling for Keane's head! Why?

OK so we're still bottom, we all knew that one win might not have done enough to move us up, however we were very unlucky to have both Reading and Plymouth winning on the same day. Anyway, what was so great about the win was the way we won ugly - look at the Watford game, we played beautifully then to have it snatched away.

For me this win will do something magical to the team, I feel the pressure will be much less, meaning more creative runs from defence, more urgency from the midfield and even the strikers may feel that they can make a risk with certain runs.

So, for all those people still calling for the manager to be sacked, take a reality check on our current situation, yes, bottom, but a win on Saturday and more than likely we will be out of the bottom three, then a win against Sheffield Wednesday will take us up another couple of places.

We are four games unbeaten, I think it's only two losses in 10 games as well. This is actually very very good, yes, wins would have been nice but still it's a good stat.

Our defence looks really solid, and although everyone keeps commenting on the one-man strike force from Derby, go back five or six games and I'm sure even then the defence would have struggled.

The midfield looks good, a bit of tweaking maybe and although I keep praising Trotter I can now accept that maybe he shouldn't start - that doesn't mean I'd bring Garvan back, who by the way looks terrible at the moment - certainly not banging on the first team door.

I'd play Quinner in that role or maybe even try Leadbitter there and push Edwards into the attacking midfield role, creating the opportunity for Walters to move out wide which we all know is his best position.

The biggest problem is the front two, I felt so angry with Stead, scoring two goals in reserves, scoring against Plymouth but then did nothing when he started. Could he be better coming off the bench I wonder? Maybe starting with Priskin and Couñago is the way to go, we will see.

Now the reason I'm mentioning all of the above is to ask, why do we still see fit to moan about Keane? He's doing well, creating a team worthy of climbing up the table.

Now Delaney's looking good at centre-back for me Martin and Healy are the only signings which make you moan, but apart from them all others have been great, so for me you can't slate Keane for that. I see a great future and a brilliant manager in Keane. What he did with David Wright was fantastic, for those that say Keane realised he made a mistake, I think you'll find he hadn't, he's brought Wright back in and he is fantastic, twice the player he was last year - granted he was always good but now he's excellent - for me that was Keane's work.

So to summarise, two losses 10 games, four games unbeaten, stronger side, confidence up, for me the future is looking better and for me this is all because of one man - Keane.

RK still remains an unknown quantity. He must be given more time with next review at end of the year when we will have-played another 9 games. Things need to improve so that we get say 18 points from the next 9 or at least are progressing towards that. Does he have any man management skills? Is he a judge of a player? We do not know yet.

Up front we have problems. Pablo and Priskin need a run. We all know Walters is a wide player not a striker. Stead probably isn't good enough. Otherwise we have inconsistency of selection, just like Jim.

Hopefully the win plus the crowd's encouragement will produce greater confidence but the idea we are going to suddenly shoot up the table is fantasy.

i can see there being at least 14 points up for grabs. should be better than that really if we are going to be what was expected of us at the start of the season. We have no consistancy so i have no idea how many we will get but i feel any less than 10 should lead to keanes departure come the new year (and this is coming from a keano fan) Willl be intersting to see what some other people think.
Good question dirtydingusmagee!!! what do you think?

I am not taking the Mickey out of you lads and I do like some of the optimism that I see on here. I am not an Ipswich fan but I have followed them since 1980 when I first started going to watch games. I do think that the win over Derby papered over a crack or two but for some of you to be saying that you are only 13 points or so from the playoffs is unrealistic I think. I would love it if you did but I am only 2 people short of a threesome. It's not going to happen. I think Ipswich will finish mid-table and make a good push for promotion next year. As for my threesome, if I can get the wife on board during the transfer window, I will only be 1 short !!! Seriously, I hope I am wrong and good luck for the season.

Opinion seems to sway on each result, one scrappy win against a very poor Derby side who could barely muster a full team is not that impressive and is almost met with euphoria, especially as that win was the only one of the season. I am not full of optimisim about what Roy Keane is going to achieve, especially after the poor first half on Sat. Having said that an undeafed run of four games is something to build on, Reading and Cardiff away will be significant tests. Too early to sack Roy Keane as we are still in touching didtance of 4th from bottom, but the turning point will probably come in Jan/Feb when it will become more evident if Roy is the man to lead Town.

"i can see there being at least 14 points up for grabs." - Scottieblue, forgive me for being pedantic, but aren't there actually 21 points up for grabs?

That said I'd like to think that we can get 10 of these at the very least; that would be a great improvement by anyones standards.

Unfortunately I can't see it happening and I fear that we may just find ourselves caught in a relegation fight for the rest of the season.

I really hope I'm wrong, and in one sense I wouldn't be surprised if I am. But the fact remains that even if we hadn't let in those last minute goals we'd still only have 17 or 18 points which would put us mid table, closer to the bottom than the top. Which ever way you look at it we're not very good at the moment!

Last few results have been draws and a win. Keep picking up points and we'll fly up the table.

Dirty D, i would have probably expressed my discontentment when the news was announced. I can envisage a couple of people that would have mortified me had they been appointed. However from then on in he and his team would have had my full support and i would have played my part as the 12th man to the full. I would also have been aware that from a personality side of things i wouldn't know that person at all, anything that i think i know about him would have come only through the media. Bearing that in mind i would try to put my prejudices to one side and keep an open mind. People say on here, this signing was crap and so was this one etc. Didier drogba was awful for two seasons i think before we saw what a good player he is and there are a multitude of other examples i could give of players taking a while to settle, therefore i would not criticise new players either. This dissapointing start we have had could turn out to be a god send further down the line, i know this from experiences in my own life. We may not enjoy the bad times but they are often more beneficial for us than the easy times. I am excited about what lies ahead, not in terms of promotion but in the style of the team it looks like i could be watching in the near future. I believe that jim assembled a squad containing some good players technically and at times we played some nice football, but all too often we came up against players who showed much more drive and appetite than ours. Some on here rave about Garvan, I dont deny he has talent and can ping the ball around sweetly. However when he lost the ball in the last 1st team game he played, he made no effort at all to try and retrieve it, he just stood there and watched. Do we want players, no matter how talented, with that attitude in our team? Dont we as paying fans deserve a bit more effort than that?
Finally i'd like to remind you of an old maxim that has stood the test of time. United we stand, divided we fall
